I have heard from several friends lately who have had their laptops stolen and upon reading the news last week that popular pop act and producer Will.I.Am tracked down the guy who stole his iPad using Macs specific software for tracking hardware I thought it time to share an open source solution for this.
Prey Project is a small application which runs silently on your computer whether your running Windows or OS X it doesn’t matter. This open source solution runs on all major operating systems, is Open Source and in turn a free application. The app lets you recover your stolen computers or portable media devices by pinging your account online once someone goes online with the stolen device. All you have to do is register for an account and you can track it through their website. As soon as your computer is stolen you go online login and tell them its been stolen. Then they will begin to listen out for when the perpetrator tries to access to internet and provide you with the relevant information which you can provide to the authorities to aid in the tracking and return of your precious hardware.
